Windows tablets from Samsung, Asus head to AT&T

The string of product announcements continue with two more Windows 8 tablets headed to the carrier.

AT&T said today it would sell two Windows tablets, Samsung’s ATIV Smart PC and Asus’s VivoTab RT.

The tablets are just the latest mobile devices to be unveiled by AT&T in the last few days. Both 4G LTE products, which run on Windows RT, will be available for the holiday season, although the company didn’t specify when or at what price.

While the iPad has been a runaway success, few other tablets, particularly ones connected to a cellular network, have been successful. AT&T is hoping for a change with the introduction of Windows RT, part of the Windows 8 family from Microsoft.

The ATIV, part of Samsung’s Windows lineup of smartphones and tablets, comes with an 11.6-inch high-definition PLS display, an Intel Clover Trail 1.5-gigahertz dual-core processor, and 64 gigabytes of internal storage. It also comes with a trial version of Microsoft Office 2013, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

The device has a detachable keyboard-docking system allowing it to switch between a notebook PC and tablet PC.

The VivoTab RT has a 10.1-inch multi-touch Super IPS display, 32GB of storage and Nvidia’s Tegra 3 TE quad-core processor. The device comes with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview Edition.

AT&T is hoping for a pick-up in sales of tablets with the introduction of family data plans. The plans are designed to make it easier for consumers to bring multiple devices under one plan, using a shared bucket of data.
